Surrounding Yourself with the Right People

Surrounding yourself with the right people in your life will be a game changer for your success.

It is important to make sure that you are not in a situation where you are around people that are hindering you in achieving your goals. Maybe the people around you are unintentionally tearing you down. Maybe they see the world through a diminished lens. Maybe they do not see things in a way that is helpful for your long term strategies for yourself. Or maybe they are just not in the same place as you are, and therefore, you need to limit your time with them.

Who we surround ourselves with, as we were taught when we were kids, says a lot about who we are. Some say that you are an average of the five closest people to you. Think about your five closest people in your life. Are they people who are motivating you? Pushing you forward? Encouraging you to dream and do great things?

In order to get to where you need to be, you must first be aware of your everyday life and how the decisions you make, like the people you position yourself around, will either hurt you or help you. When assessing this piece of your life, you should not come from a place of judgement. By being intentional about who you spend your time with, you are not saying that you are better than others or that certain people are not worthy of you being around them.

Being aware is being alert and fully understanding who you are and where you want to go. As we discussed in our post You Are Your Brand, your awareness of who you are and where you are heading will help you make strategic decisions within your life that will affect your long term future. Keeping the value of your life and how important it is for you to achieve your dreams in the forefront of your mind every single day will allow you to make smart decisions about who you surround yourself with.

If you have a piece of clothing, or a ring, or a gift that is very valuable to you, you more than likely protect it and keep it safe. You do not just throw it anywhere. When you put it up at night, you put it up in a way that you know it will not get damaged. You take great care in handling it. Why? Because it is valuable to you. It is important to you. That same thing applies to your life. Your life should be more important to you than anything. You should value who you are and want to protect yourself and your dreams and your goals.

As you become aware of your value and you want to protect who you are, you must choose to spend time with people who are going to be a positive influence on you. People who are going to make you feel better when you leave their presence. People who are going to be a part of your success. People who give you valuable input on your life and your goals. People who will not limit you and hinder you. People who are strong. Iron sharpens iron. You must surround yourself with people who are going to make you stronger and make you a better person.

Being aware of the value of your life and your time, means that you have to make tough choices to not put yourself in the company of people who will harm you or hinder you. This is tough to do, because sometimes this may be your family or your friends. This does not mean you are judging those friends or family. It just means that you are in a different place than they are.

If you know that you really want to be a successful business owner, if you know that you have this dream and this idea that you want to give all your energy and effort to and you are going to have to take risks to get to your dream, then you need to surround yourself with people who think like that. People who believe in taking risks. People who celebrate that you are hitting the ground running.

If you want to hustle after your dreams, then you cannot surround yourself with people who are complacent with where they are. Many times people will project their own mindset onto you and intentionally pull you down. You have to be aware of the effect people like this may have on you.

If you walk down a path and get bit by a snake, you have to be aware that there are snakes on the path. When you go into an environment with family, friends, coleagues, etc, you have to be aware of who is who. You have to be aware of the people that need to be mentors to you and that will benefit you. You need to more importantly be aware of the people who see the world differently. The people who do not want to go out and take risks. There is nothing wrong with this mindset, but it will not benefit you and your pursuits to be around them in a significant way.

Focus on surrounding yourself with the people who are going to further you. Find people who have already accomplished the things you want to accomplish. Find the people who have taken bigger risks than you have and will give you honest advice. Surround yourself with people who are strong within their own right, so they will celebrate your accomplishments with you and push you to do more.

If it is your goal to become independently successful financially, you have to surround yourself with people who have already done that themselves. Just by being around people who are where you want to be will motivate you and inspire you to get to where they are.It goes back to you being an average of the five closest people in your life. Who are those people? Are they pulling you up closer to your goals?

Think about the people you are surrounding yourself with right now. Ask yourself: When I leave these people’s presence, do I leave feeling inspired? Do I leave feeling motivated to do more? Do I leave feeling challenged and ready to take on my goals? If the answer is no, you need to become mindful of getting around people who will better you.

If you spend enough time in a gutter with rats, you will eventually get used to it. You won’t smell them anymore and they will stop bothering you. Your tolerance for them will grow with time. The same thing applies to people. If you surround yourself with negative people with limited thinking, they will eventually influence you. You are responsible for getting around people who will be a positive influence on you.

Surround yourself with people who are going to make you stronger. Surround yourself with people who are going to build you up. Surround yourself with people who are going to inspire you by their very presence to do more, be more, to take more risks, and to achieve the great things that deep down inside you know you can achieve.

You have one life. Your life is more valuable than any possession that you have. Take care if it. Protect it. And surround yourself with people who are going to uplift it and make you better.
